My Postgraduate Experience
Say hello to Lindsey Lou Master of Science! Yep, last week I graduated from my Master’s degree in Digital Marketing (how crazy)! I really can’t believe that it has been two years since I decided to take the leap and sign up for my postgraduate course. For me, there were a handful of factors which lead to the decision to pursue further education. Now, looking back, this decision was one of the best I have ever made. I personally feel that my course provided me with more than just an academic education or “certificate of achievement”. It filled me with passion for all things digital and reaffirmed my choice to switch up my career path.
Today I thought I would share a little bit about my postgraduate experience and discuss why I decided to pursue further education. Hopefully, this post will be of use to recent graduates, or anyone considering postgraduate study.
A Change of Direction
If you didn’t know, my original undergraduate degree was in commercial music (and no, it didn’t involve writing jingles for commercials – but the thought of this does make me laugh). It actually focussed on the “behind the scenes” parts of the music industry. From artist branding and marketing to copyright law, we covered it all. Throughout my time on this course, I genuinely loved learning about all aspects of the industry and to this day I am still a huge music buff. However, whilst studying I became increasingly intrigued by the world of digital media and spent a lot of my free time reading blogs and consuming content online. By the time I had completed my undergrad I knew that I wanted to pursue this passion further. Therefore, opting for a postgraduate course allowed me to change my subject area completely without undertaking another 4-year degree.
Finding your Niche
Whilst I had always had a keen interest in marketing and branding, I knew that I wanted to focus more on the digital side of things. Therefore it was important for me to pick a degree that focussed specifically on this niche. This is where UWS’s fab Digital Marketing MSc came into play. The course, delivered by UWS’s innovative and forward thinking lecturers, provides students with a rich bank of theoretical knowledge in addition to valuable, practical experience. I would highly recommend this particular degree to anyone interested in a career within the digital marketing sector.
Although I was only 22 when graduating from my undergraduate degree, the thought of another 4 years in higher education seemed extremely daunting. The compressed structure of my postgraduate course allowed me to study an entirely new degree in just one year. This timescale definitely contributed to my decision to enrol onto the MSc.
To be completely honest, upon completing my undergraduate degree I was left feeling a little bit like “Soooo, what now?”. I didn’t know exactly what my next move would be or even which field I would enter. However, two years on, my career path has never been clearer and I am super happy to be working within an industry which I am so passionate about. I really believe that this is all thanks to my time spent in further education.
Doing what you love.
The saying “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life” really resonates with me. I couldn’t imagine anything worse than working in a mundane, lifeless job and constantly living for the weekend. Personally, I would much rather be happy in a career I’m passionate about than miserable in a role that doesn’t challenge or excite me. Even if this comes with a financial sacrifice. My master’s degree in digital marketing has allowed me to pursue my passion for all things digital whilst acting as a stepping stone to finding my dream career.
