Detoxing your Wardrobe
Like many people, I would describe myself as a little bit of a hoarder – especially when it comes to clothes. With this in mind, you can only imagine how cluttered my wardrobe can be. If you are a bit like me, there’s a good chance that there are more than a few pieces lurking in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn since god knows when e.g those disco pants from 2012 (you know the ones). Additionally, you may find that there are also a few pieces in there that no longer fit with your personal style – like those glitter jelly shoes you wore a few summers back.
As I have mentioned numerous times on my blog, over the last few months, I have been working my way through the wonderful “Curated Closet” amongst many other styles guides. The goal? To buy less and wear more, whilst curating a wardrobe that suits my personal style to a t.
Often, outfit planning can be a tad overwhelming. In my case, I am almost certain that this is down to my storage being a little overcrowded with pieces I have collected over the past decade. Therefore, this season I promised myself that prior to purchasing any new season pieces, I would detox my existing wardrobe (and chairdrobe). Over the past week, I have done exactly that and the outcome has been pretty amazing. I now have a curated closet of pieces that I know I will wear on the daily which has made outfit planning a whole lot easier and less time consuming too! Today I thought I would share a few of my tips for carrying out your 2018 A/W detox.
A biggie that I’ve learned so far that carrying out a thorough wardrobe detox takes up quite a bit of time. I would, therefore, suggest setting aside a whole day – or at least an afternoon to have a good rummage through everything. Snacks and a good playlist are also recommended!
Whilst clearing out my own wardrobe, I found that being honest with yourself throughout the detox is crucial! Are you really going to re-wear that sequined skirt you’ve had for years that no longer fits you? Nope, there’s a good chance that you are not. Being real with yourself will make the process a whole lot easier – even for the most indecisive hoarders!
Yep, deciding which pieces to keep and which pieces to say goodbye to can be pretty tricky! Therefore, asking yourself a few crucial questions can make this process a little bit easier. Here are a few q’s that I found most helpful;
- Does this fit me?
- When was the last time I wore this? Was it in the last 12 months?
- If I saw this in a shop tomorrow, would I pick it up?
- Does this fit with my current personal style?
- Does this hold sentimental value?
Its a No from Me.
Stumbled on a few pieces that just aren’t working for ya anymore? Now you have a few choices. First off, for pieces in the “no” pile that are damaged, frayed or unwearable, grab a big old bin bag and say adios.
For pieces in the “no” pile that are still wearable but not really your thing anymore you have two options. Donate – to a charity or a friend or sell to make a few extra pennies for some a/w wardrobe treats!
Over the years I collected a handful of “keepsake pieces” that I just haven’t been able to part with such as my staff T-shirts from the summer camp I worked at and my graduation dress. However, as The Curated Closet points out – these aren’t something that you do have to part with. In Rees’s style guide, she suggests treating these pieces for what they are and finding a place for them out with your wardrobe e.g a memory box or something similar.
Bikinis in Winter?
Throughout the sorting process, you will undoubtedly come across a few pieces that are no longer season appropriate e.g bikini’s and beach dresses. Rather than have them clog up your A/W wardrobe space, pop them in a box or bag for winter storage. I also find that it is extremely handy to write a list of everything in the bag, that way you’ll know exactly what each one contains when you look them out in the Spring.
Put your clothes where you can see em’
My final tip for carrying out your wardrobe detox is to make sure that everything in your current wardrobe is visible to you. I for one am terrible at piling my clothes into my drawers after washing, then forgetting what actually have. Folding and hanging items neatly allows me to see what I’m working with making outfit planning super speedy.
